2014 color of the year!
Last week, with big fanfare, Pantone announced it's prediction for the 2014 color of the year!
Drum roll please ... Radiant Orchid
According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone, "An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today's society."
Interestingly, in late November, Sherwin Williams also announced their prediction for the 2014 color of the year (Exclusive Plum SW6263) and although these color predictions are often very different, this year they line up ... which points to purple being a big color influence for the next few years!
Sherwin William's prediction of course is based more exclusively on interiors and paint colors, while Pantone's prediction includes fashion as well as home interiors.
This color has already permeated fashion runways and glimpses of it were seen steadily in the 2014 fashion spring previews.
The big question is how this color will be used in home interiors, especially since it can have such a feminine gender appeal. Pantone addresses that question this way, "Spruce up interiors by incorporating this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. Adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows. Likewise, the vibrant color is sure to liven up neutrals including gray, beige and taupe."
I'm not expecting that our paint lab will be flooded with requests for purple painted cabinetry, but I definitely see all shades of this color (including lighter and darker purples) being used as accent wall paint colors and for soft goods throughout a home interior. Here are a few examples ...
