Carving Out a Space Just for You

Let’s face it, our lives are busy and we need to make time to relax, unwind from the day and enjoy friends and family. Whether it’s reading a book, bird watching, practicing a craft, doing yoga, or simply kicking your feet up, everyone would love their own space to relax.

Having an entire room for ourselves like this home library is not always an option. But, creating a nook just for you is something that is doable.

First, think about what relaxes you and dedicate a space for it in your home. Is it a place to yourself? Is it a space for friends and family to gather? Is it a space for meditation? Is it a good book?

Next, take a look at your home and see if you can spot a corner, a wall, a window or another area that gets little use or traffic. I truly believe every space in a home should have a purpose and a function.

If a space is not getting used, give the space a purpose. These unused areas are the best places for adding a personalized nook. With less traffic, there should be less distraction.

Now that you have decided what and where ... consider using a combination of built-ins like boot benches, lockers, cabinets, cubbies and bookshelves to define the space. Choose storage for the items that will need to be tucked out of sight and for what you'd like to be visible.

Window seats are a simple way to create a nook. They add storage, emphasize the view, and create a cozy spot to read, write, play a crossword and just simply enjoy the view. They also make a great spot for storing yoga mats!

A window seat's primary function doesn’t necessarily have to be just for alone time. You can also use the boot bench to store workout equipment, games, children's toys, and extra seating when entertaining.
