“The homeowner wanted a contemporary kitchen but her home had a very traditional design,” explained Elizabeth Ericksen, part of the talented design team at Ispiri Design + Build, a design, build and remodel firm in Woodbury, MN. “In order to blend the kitchen with her home, we chose a more transitional design approach to her kitchen and she loves it!”

The homeowner appreciated the sleek, clean looks she had seen in magazines and approached the design team at Ispiri Design + Build with her ideas.  She initially favored a sleek, slab door, but Elizabeth recommended Dura Supreme’s Napa Panel door style with slab drawer fronts. Elizabeth explained, “I felt the wide stiles and rails of this door with the slab drawer front was an excellent compromise between contemporary and traditional styling. The kitchen definitely has a contemporary look, but the door style we chose blends beautifully with the rest of the home.” Additionally, there are several small but very important details like the top molding treatment, lift-up, bi-folding doors, and sleek, stainless cabinet hardware that tie the entire look together.

The homeowner had several specific requests for her new kitchen space. She wanted a convenient desk area along with open, built-in units to display photos, artwork, and books. An eat-in dining space within the kitchen was another factor for being able to utilize the space more effectively. Even though floor space was at a premium, she definitely wanted a kitchen island with seating so that her kids could do homework in the kitchen and have a place to hang out with their friends.

Since the kitchen is integrated with the family room, the design team made sure to tie the design elements together so that everything blended. The same Poppy Seed stain that was used as a contrasting color on the kitchen island was used in the family room for the cabinetry on both sides of the fireplace, along with the same Napa Panel door style. “The homeowner likes to use bright, fresh color in her home, and she was hesitant at first about this monochromatic color scheme, but it turned out so cozy and warm looking. She is very happy with her new kitchen!”
