Investing in your Dream Kitchen

Determining how much to invest in your new kitchen is one of the most important decisions you will make during the remodeling process.  There's good reason for this - designing your new kitchen will add substantial value to your home, which is an investment in your home's equity.  For most homeowners, designing a new kitchen is a once-in-a-lifetime event and we take that responsibility seriously.  There are a lot of decisions that need to be made along the way including building codes that need to be considered, precise measurements of the space, coordination of appliances, flooring, countertops, plumbing, electrical and final installation.  Designing or remodeling a kitchen can be a fun, exciting experience, but it is also a major, long-term investment in your home.

Industry experts recommend investing between 10 - 25% of the home's value for a kitchen remodeling project.  That equates to $25,000 to $62,500 for a home valued at $250,000.  Of this budget, you can expect to spend 40% on cabinetry alone as this is the most prominent and hardest working feature within the kitchen.  Another 35% should be budgeted for appliances, countertops, flooring and other fixtures such as lighting, plumbing etc.  The remaining 25% includes the costs of labor, design, contracting services, permit fees etc. 

Even with careful consideration, you should expect some unforeseen costs and unbudgeted expenditures.

Here are some costs that may affect your budget:

  • Do you need to move any walls or are you happy with the exisiting space?
  • Do you need to move, replace, or add any windows or doors?
  • Are the existing appliances being replaced?
  • Are the sink and stove locations OK or will plumbing and gas lines need to be moved?
  • Are the existing electrical wiring and plumbing pipes up to code or will it need to be modified or replaced?
